Medical-Assisted Treatment (MAT) FAQ

What is MAT?

Medication-assisted treatment, or MAT, combines FDA-approved medication with counseling, support, and ongoing medical care to help people recover from opioid use disorder and other substance use challenges. At Crossroads Recovery Center of Louisiana, MAT may be part of an outpatient treatment plan designed to support recovery while helping patients continue work, family, and daily responsibilities.

Is MAT just replacing one drug with another?

No. MAT is not simply replacing one drug with another. When prescribed and monitored appropriately, medications used in MAT can help reduce cravings, lower the risk of relapse, and support stability. The goal is not to create another addiction. The goal is to help the patient regain control and participate in recovery.

Can I get Suboxone or buprenorphine through outpatient treatment?

Eligible patients may be able to receive buprenorphine-based treatment, including Suboxone, through an outpatient treatment program. At Crossroads, the first step is a confidential assessment. The provider reviews your history, current needs, substance use, medical concerns, and treatment goals to determine whether MAT is appropriate.

Do I have to go to inpatient rehab to get help?

Not everyone needs inpatient rehab. Many people can receive care through outpatient addiction treatment.Outpatient treatment may be appropriate for patients who are medically stable, have a safe environment, and can participate in scheduled appointments while living at home. If a higher level of care is needed, Crossroads can help guide the patient toward the right next step.

Can I keep working while receiving outpatient treatment?

Yes, many patients choose outpatient treatment because it allows them to continue working, caring for family, and managing daily responsibilities.

Can MAT or outpatient treatment be done through telehealth?

Some MAT and outpatient recovery services may be available through telehealth for eligible patients. Crossroads offers telemedicine options through Geaux 2 Recovery, powered by Crossroads Recovery Center of Louisiana. Telehealth availability may depend on clinical, regulatory, and payer requirements. Some in-person visits may still be required at the Baton Rouge or Gonzales office.

How long will I need to stay on MAT?

The length of time on MAT is different for each person. Some patients may need medication support for months, while others may benefit from longer-term treatment. The decision should be made between the patient and provider based on stability, cravings, relapse risk, recovery progress, and overall health.

Does Medicaid or insurance cover MAT and outpatient addiction treatment?

MAT and outpatient treatment may be covered by Medicaid or commercial insurance, depending on the patient’s plan and eligibility. Crossroads can help review insurance and affordable care options before or during the intake process. Patients should call to confirm coverage, costs, and appointment options.

What happens at the first appointment?

The first appointment usually includes a confidential assessment with the treatment team. During this visit, Crossroads will review your substance use history, medical needs, treatment goals, insurance or payment information, and whether outpatient care, MAT, telemedicine, or another level of care may be appropriate. The goal is to help determine the safest and most effective next step.
